Optimize muskellunge management in Québec
In 2010 the Ministère des Forêts, de la Faune et des Parcs du Québec began a genetic study on Muskies in Québec. Many samples were taken since then so the genetic profile of muskellunge in Quebec is completed.
The next step for this study requires more effort. We must now know the status of stocks in the various bodies of water in Quebec, but also we must identify the essential habitats for muskies.
To do so, it is necessary to use telemetry. Two types of transmitters will be implanted in muskellunge in order to track their movements and identify spawning habitat.
The study will initially focus on the Lac Saint-Pierre and upstream where some warning flags have been raised. Once the critical habitat of the muskellunge populations have been identified, it will be possible to take actions to protect and improve them.
Your donation to the Muskies Canada Foundation for Québec will help finance this study.
