February Meeting

FEBRUARY SPEAKER ANNOUCEMENT – Wil Wegman
February 12thWil Wegman is an award-winning outdoor writer whose ice fishing articles have been published in most Canadian and several US fishing and outdoor magazines. He was a member of Team Canada at the World Ice Fishing Championships held on Lake Simcoe in 1991 and taught ice fishing courses at several college campuses of Seneca and Georgian for 15 years. He has won the popular Perchin for MS event on Simcoe and the Perch Attack as well as several top-ten finishes in the former Canadian Ice Fishing Championship. Wil is the Hooked on Fishing columnist for Lake Simcoe Living Magazine and a frequent guest on Sportsnet Fan 590’s Outdoor Journal Radio Show. He is the only person to win the Bill Bond Memorial Award twice (for his contribution to promoting and conserving the fishery of Lake Simcoe) and in 2017 he was inducted into the Canadian Angler Hall of Fame, won the National Recreational Fisheries Award and the Rick Morgan Professional Conservation Award. Wil’s ice fishing Lake Simcoe seminars reach a broad audience all over southern and central Ontario and into NY state.

Wil is going to be presenting his “Ice Fishing Lake Simcoe Seminar” to Muskies Canada’s Kawartha Chapter on the evening of February 12th. He will also cover ice safety with a few slides on ice fishing wilderness lakes for brookies and splake. Wil is no stranger to Muskies Canada, having been a key player with MNR’s Lake Simcoe Muskie Restoration Program for most of the 14 years it ran. Several Muskie Canada members have spent a day with Wil trap netting muskie for egg collections on Gloucester Pool or have seen his popular weekly updates during the spring trapnetting exercises. Wil’s visit to our club is without his MNR hat on and he’s happy to talk ice fishing with our group.

December Meeting

Our next Kawartha Lakes Chapter meeting takes place on Wednesday, December 11 at the Peterborough Naval Association . The format and times are different from our regular meetings as it is actually a year end social and awards night. A social and bar will be take place starting at 5:00pm and the bar will be open throughout the evening. Dinner will get under way at 6:00pm and the meeting will end at 8:00pm. Members are welcome to bring family members and it will be a fully catered buffet supper with three choices of meat, salads, vegetables, desert, coffee/tea.

While your chapter will be covering a good portion of the evening’s expenses we need to recover a minimal amount with adults set at $10 per person, children 6-12 years old at $5 per person and under 5 years is free. As the meal is cooked & served on site we need to confirm our numbers no later than Dec.4.

We ask that you confirm your attendance and number of people (names help) no later than Dec.4 by contacting Mike Walsh . Also there will be a goodwill food collection that evening with proceeds to the Kawartha Food Share so please consider bringing a non-perishable food item.

Finally, as is the tradition for our Xmas meetings, members are asked to bring a new fishing item (gift cards accepted also) with a retail value of at least $25 for the prize table and those that do will receive a free ticket for a new St. Croix muskie rod to be drawn during the evening. Tickets can be purchased for the prize table itself throughout the evening.  Look forward to seeing you there & please take a minute to register with Mike Walsh.  (Walk ins are welcomed for the evening but only those pre-registered will be guaranteed a meal).

November Meeting

October Meeting

IMPORTANT!! Venue change as well as a reminder that our Oct meeting only is changed to the third Wednesday. The Venue for this meeting is Peterborough Lions Community Centre, 347 Burnham St.

For our October meeting we’ve decided to host a Muskies Handling 101 discussion. We’ve been seeing some interesting things out there that indicate maybe we should have an interactive evening where we show how to properly and safely handle muskies, the basics of onboard equipment and release tools and anything else that our members would be interested in discussing. MCI President Pete Bostelmann will lead this discussion and we will attempt to make it as ‘hands on’ as possible.

If you have questions about anything related to best practices when it comes to muskie fishing, let me know and we’ll get it answered. You can PM questions or e-mail to kawarthalakesmci@gmail.com. Any muskie basics topic, proper handling, measurement, tools and equipment, terminal tackle, hook sharpening, whatever you want to know more about.

John Anderson – season wrap up.

Season wrap up with John Anderson.  Don’t miss this meeting.  John is always informative and entertaining.

We’ll also have the presentation of the “Kahuna Cup,” talk a little bit about plans for 2020, as well as the Chapter Executive for next year.
