February 12thWil Wegman is an award-winning outdoor writer whose ice fishing articles have been published in most Canadian and several US fishing and outdoor magazines. He was a member of Team Canada at the World Ice Fishing Championships held on Lake Simcoe in 1991 and taught ice fishing courses at several college campuses of Seneca and Georgian for 15 years. He has won the popular Perchin for MS event on Simcoe and the Perch Attack as well as several top-ten finishes in the former Canadian Ice Fishing Championship. Wil is the Hooked on Fishing columnist for Lake Simcoe Living Magazine and a frequent guest on Sportsnet Fan 590’s Outdoor Journal Radio Show. He is the only person to win the Bill Bond Memorial Award twice (for his contribution to promoting and conserving the fishery of Lake Simcoe) and in 2017 he was inducted into the Canadian Angler Hall of Fame, won the National Recreational Fisheries Award and the Rick Morgan Professional Conservation Award. Wil’s ice fishing Lake Simcoe seminars reach a broad audience all over southern and central Ontario and into NY state.
Wil is going to be presenting his “Ice Fishing Lake Simcoe Seminar” to Muskies Canada’s Kawartha Chapter on the evening of February 12th. He will also cover ice safety with a few slides on ice fishing wilderness lakes for brookies and splake. Wil is no stranger to Muskies Canada, having been a key player with MNR’s Lake Simcoe Muskie Restoration Program for most of the 14 years it ran. Several Muskie Canada members have spent a day with Wil trap netting muskie for egg collections on Gloucester Pool or have seen his popular weekly updates during the spring trapnetting exercises. Wil’s visit to our club is without his MNR hat on and he’s happy to talk ice fishing with our group.
